10 Tips for Effective Family Management

Want to make the most of the relationships in your home? Here are “10 Tips for Effective Family Management”. These can be applied to kids, step-kids, and even spouses!

1.) Know Yourself – evaluate yourself and the activities, boundaries and follow through you plan to implement before you take on a new task in the home

2.) Dignity and Respect – families should be a win/win proposition for everyone involved. Safe, respectful, happy and healthy family members are the goal

3.) Do as I Do – model the behavior you want to see in your family members – our family members can become a mirror to our own behavior

4.) Currency – know what motivates each person and use rewards and consequences based on those things

5.) Consistency – develop goals for the family that are achievable then follow through

6.) Notice – compliment family members on their actions and words you appreciate

7.) One on one – nurturing is good for every relationship in the home – make individual time for each relationship no matter how busy you think you are

8.) Open Communication – spend adequate time with your family members where you are mentally and physically present, and show interest; this will nurture healthy communication – put the cell phones and computers down

9.) Team and Individual – house rules for everyone, but individual plans that meet each person where they are

10.) Love with healthy boundaries and respect – even when certain behaviors are unlovable

Evaluate former plans for family management against these 10 tips, and you may find your former plans will work wonders if you make a point to consider the above suggestions consistently.   Change is hard for most people and family systems, and if some of the good changes bring negative ones as well, don’t let that throw you off.  Keep consistent in expectations, increase commitment to the family and the plan, and you will be on your way to success before you know it!
